Hello,
All of a sudden I am finding that if I try to look at the files on my C
drive I receive a message that the program is being closed because of DEP.
This is a pain to say the least.
I wonder if any one can help.
John

I seem to have sorted it by making exceptions for programs which were being
closed by DEP in change the settings. Hopefully it is OK now but I don't know
why it suddenly started closing programs in the first place whereas it had
all being going along happily before. If It starts again,I shall have to come
back toyou with a plea for more help.
Thanks again and a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you,
John

Perhaps one or more of the Critical Updates you installed recently caused
the behavior as a security measure.

Thanks. It hadn't ocurred to me that could happen.

Me neither.

When did this start?
Are we hearing massed screams yet?
What CPU do you have, and did that change?

Some CPUs support DEP in hardware, but there may be differences
between AMD and Intel tribes, and problems could arise if you change
from a non-DEP CPU to a DEP one, or vice versa. Where the CPU has no
hardware DEP, the OS fakes it as best it can.

The other (slim?) possibility is that some other code is involved that
permeates these apps and affects their DEP compatibility. Both
malware and anti-malware (av) come to mind, especially as av often
have problems with DEP (possibly because they may load code into thier
own data space to single-step or breakpoint-run it for heuristics)

First, the good Customer feedback has

I'm familiar with DEP as introduced by SP2, and the issues with av,
apps etc. that came with it, but I wasn't aware that subsequent
patches had made possibly provocative changes there?

I'm also having a problem with DEP in that it wont let me open the Control
Panel so i can't get in to change its settings. This only started in the
last couple of days and I'm not aware of having made any updates in that time.

Any suggestions?

Jantyannie

Cos when i select control panel from the settings option of the start menu
the control panel window starts to open but stays completely empty and a box
appears titled
'Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows'
saying - to help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program
Name - Windows Explorer
Publisher Microsoft Corporation

Thats why

Control Panel is built from the .CPL files in the SYSTEM32 folder, as
interpreted by Control.ini and/or more recent registry settings.

So you can search for .CPL and run the one you want, directly. Don't
trust any .CPL not in System32, as it's a file type used by malware.

yes this is my personal machine at home.
It seems to be affecting any option that would use Windows Explorer as i
can't open 'Search', 'My Computer', or 'My Documents' either

Sorry to double post.
I'm quite new to XP, having used 98 for 5 years, and wasn't completely aware
of System Restore.
I have now restored my system to a week or so ago and it has cleared the
problem.
The only thing i seem to be missing that would have been installed at that
time was 'Real Media Player' not sure how that would have affected Windows
Exlporer but I'll keep an eye out for it in future.

Thanks for the advice guys - i'll remember next time to check the basics.

On my PC if I right click the START button and open 'Explorer', then left
click START I can open Control Panel, My Computer etc. Don't ask me why this
works, but it does. Is there any way to fully turn off DEP?
