Data error (cyclic redundancy check) when trying to open programs!

I can't open a few programs on my computer (for example, Calculator, Spider
Solitaire, Solitaire). When I click them on the Start menu or the Desktop, I
get the message: Data error (cyclic redundancy check). The icons next to them
have also been replaced by a generic window-thingy. I cannot figure out why
they are not working or how to fix it! I am worried that soon this will start
happening to programs that I really need (i.e. Word), and I'd kind of like to
be able to use these games! Anyone have thoughts?

Thank you so much.

It looks very much like the hard drive is failing.

Make plans to obtain a replacement ASAP and move everything off the old drive.

Thank you very much! I had no idea that that could be happening. Now I am
wondering if you know of the best way to copy my hard drive and put it on a
new one. I have never done such an operation before and I figure that there
could be more than one way to do it.

Again, thanks very much for taking the time to respond to me.
