I have been trying to copy files, both program and data files over to a CDRW
disk and when I finish and look at the properties it is always "read only" on
the attributes. Any idea what needs to be set or configured to all me to use
the info on other computers?

Are you using packet writing software. With it, you would not get this
phenomenon.

If you are using the native CD recording software that comes with XP, a
single file can not be erased or replaced. The whole CD-RW has to be erased
to start again. So in effect, I guess, it is considered as read only.

Then again, it has been so long since I have used the built in CD writing
capabilities I may be remembering this incorrectly. If I am, I expect I will
be pounced upon. (-:

No, I have been using Nero, but it is not very user friendly. I wanted to be
able to take data files back and forth between computers and be able to udate
the info on both, non-network machines.

If you are using Nero you need to have the "InCD" module installed to enable
packet writing.

I will second that: I had the same problem, and using INCD format got me going.
However, you may have trouble reading files that had been formatted by other
than InCD. I had a problem reading files formatted by the format System used by
Roxio, but it was an old version, you could be OK. Go for it.

To use the files on another computer simply copy them to the drive on the
other computer or open them in the application (ie. MS Word) and then use
"Save As" to save the file changes to your hard drive.

If files are copied from a CD-R/W to another Windows XP system then the
read-only attribute will be turned off during the copy over to that hard
drive. Or you can right click the file and select Properties->uncheck
read-only. For your information Folders will always retain the read-only
attribute. That will not affect your ability to work with files within the
directory once copied onto your hard drive.

The built in CD Writing software that XP uses treats CD-R/W discs as if they
were CD-R with the exception that you can quick erase a CD-R/W. Invest in
third party packet writing software like InCD from www.nero.com or DLA from
www.sonic.com if you wish to format your CD-R/W discs and have them behave
like a giant floppy.

Thanks to everyone for the help...
