My daughters pc will not boot since she tried to create a new partition with
partition magic.
Its a dell laptop and she has lots of schoolwork and is distraght that she
has lost it.Any recommendations pls?

Did she change anything dealing with Hide Partition or Change Active
Partition.
Where did she get the space from for her new partition?

I think her idea was to use some of the 18 gig of free space to create a
new partition for Linux which they are
just starting to use.

this is a dell issue and they should be able
to guide you with restoration or recovery.

the problem described is vague and
it is unclear if a partition was actually
added or the main one was deleted.

if you have a windows setup cd, you may
be able to use the recovery console by
booting with it or with one from another
pc.

or you can make an emergency boot cd
from another computer and see if
there is anything left on the laptop.

Improper use of PM can cause unrecoverable damage to partitions and
the hard drive cluster structure. Without knowing what she did, it's
difficult to recommend a fix. If she accidentally deleted or moved
the boot partition see next paragraph.

You "may" be able to recover a deleted partition by using the trial
version of BootiT Next Generation. Download from
www.terabyteunlimited.com. It fits on a bootable floppy or you can
create a bootable CD from the download. After booting with floppy or
CD, enter maintenance mode. Be sure to read the help file
thoroughly.

If that doesn't work, she may have lost her schoolwork for good.
She'll probably have to use the Dell recovery CDs to get the machine
back up and running.
