D:/ not accessible

Even I'd updated all my software including Windows XP-SP2 and drivers on an
IBM R32 notebook (2568GBM) still my DVD/CDRW (combo) cannot see some of the
CD's I've made with the same drive (Matshita UJDA 720 DVD/CDRW )!
I've formated the HDD and reinstalled completely entire software (back to
factory setup), the problem still remains.
First, I thought might be a problem of software or recording setings, but,
as I couln't find any explanation on the web related to this issue I've
started thinking of buying a new drive....or I will spend money for nothing?
Anybody has any ideea woh to sove this issue?

firmware upgrade?
if none of this works, might have to get a new one.
