To make a long story short, I needed to bring my laptop back to factory
settings and did a total recovery. Everything was fine, I installed patches,
new software/hardware, etc. Next thing I know, my "d" drive (which is my
cd/dvd rom) is not working. Error message states that request couldnj't be
preformed because of an I/O device error. It won't read anything. Including
the disk that brings the laptop back to factory settings. The device manager
states that the device is working properly. Any ideas?

what softwares have you installed? could be due to CD burning software or
virual CD software.

Whatever came preinstalled on the machine. I did a total recovery and I
remember it worked fine afterwords because I was able to install other
software via cd. I thought maybe it was the cd software and I updated what
I thought was it yesterday after my initial post of the problem. It is some
type of cd/dvd drop & drag. When I go into that and eject the disc via the
software, the cd tray opens. So, somehow, the computer is reading the
software to open the tray, but the computer is not registering that there is
a cd in the tray (doesn't matter if the cd is data or music). FYI, my "d"
drive is a cdrw/dvd player.

FYI - I just noticed that when I open media player 10, it says the cd drive
is in use even though there is nothing in no cd in the tray.
