HKLM is short for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE."

You are apparently new to registry editing. Be extremely careful.
Changes are saved immediately, and mistakes can screw up your
computer royally. This is not a place for beginners to fool
around in.

HKLM is an abbreviation for Hkey_Local_Machine.

I am trying to add a option in the folder vew box !

What option? Customizing the folder background involves modifying the
desktop.ini file.

Hi,

Go to Start/Run and type in: Regedit

From there you will have five hives listed. The third is called
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

As per your subject line:

Edit the desktop.ini file in the folder and remove the line
IconArea_Text=0x00000000 (some number)

Thank you so very much for taking the time to try to help me from the (microsoft.public.windowsxp.general)!

And yes I am very new with the registry, but I am very careful, you web
page has a lot of stuff for me to read about the registry!

If you don't mind, I would like to explain to you about what I am trying
to do and maybe you can help me with this!

I have done this or I should say tried to [(Add Recycle Bin to Folder
Options

Listings 1 and 2 are the direct way to hide the Recycle Bin icon. To
demonstrate one of the cooler ways to hack the Windows XP registry, I'll show
you a better way to hide the icon. We'll give it a user interface.

Listing 3 does just that. It extends Folder Options by adding an option for
showing the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop. Customizing the key
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder is
how you add options to this dialog box. Advanced users can use this key as a
guide for how to extend it. Beginners can use this script to add an option
for the Recycle Bin icon: Save Listing 3 below in the text file Binopt.reg
and then double-click it. After importing Binopt.reg into the registry, a new
option is listed in the Folder Options dialog box that lets you configure the
Recycle Bin icon)] when I make the reg. file my computer comes back and says
[(cannot import C:\Documents and settings\Jesse ----\Desktop\Binopt.reg:
The specified file is not a registry script. you can only import binary files
from with in the registry editor.)]

I have followed the instructions could you help with this if I can get this
for the recycle bin I may be able do it for other things, Amen lol

Thank you for your time!

Pls post the contents of the REG file. BTW, here is the correct REG file to
accomplish what you want.

--------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\RecycleBinOnDesktop]
"RegPath"="Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\HideDesktopIcons\\NewStartPanel"
"Text"="Show Recycle Bin icon on the desktop"
"Type"="checkbox"
"ValueName"="{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}"
"CheckedValue"=dword:00000000
"UncheckedValue"=dword:00000001
"DefaultValue"=dword:00000001
"HKeyRoot"=dword:80000001

Addendum:
------------
If you're using Classic Start Menu, change the RegPath value in that script
from:

"Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\HideDesktopIcons\\NewStartPanel"
to
"Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\HideDesktopIcons\\ClassicStartMenu"

I have figured out how to change the backgrounds with the desktop.ini Thank
you. I added the IconArea_Text=225,0,255 but only changed the desktop.ini
folder font, I am thinking this was because all the others are compressed and
it shows this by using blue font. How can I unable this and change the font
to what I need ! I have seen online how to change the color of the folders to
show the compression!
As far as the recycle bin thing! I did as you as you said;

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 (first line)

Binopt.reg (2nd line)

I had a window that said it did do something to the registry but what I
don’t know wish I did so I could undo it. It is suppose to be a way to hide
or to display the recycle bin on the desktop!

To Add Recycle Bin to Folder Options

This was suppose to add the option (check box) in folder options

My Computer\ Tools\folder options\view\- and the check box isn’t there!
Bummer! Any thoughts about this??

ok the desk.ini worked as far as the background, now I got to change the font
and my files are compressed so this will make them blue, how can I fix this,
surely I don't half to uncompress them!
Thank You for all your help!

I have been going to:
MyComputer\Tools\Folder Options\ View tab
If I could get this check box for the recycle bin which would be cool, I
could learn to add others!

don't understand this--(remove the D8 bit)

Why? That is not needed.

That all said, you seem to need more info/direction for what you are trying
to doing. It would be wise to separate these two topics. Also, stop
emailing me. I did not write nor instruct you to what you are trying, as I
have told you. Good luck!
