"Customize Notifications" in the taskbar

I would be really grateful if someone could tell me how to clear 'past items' from the "customize notifications" box on taskbar properties. I have items in there from months ago and would like to tidy things up, but can't seem to be able to find where I can delete anything. I have the three choices: 'hide when inactive' ; 'always show' ; and 'always hide' - all i want to do is delete!! Please help!
