Does anyone know if it is possible to modify the metadata in word or
other office apps. I wan't to roll out a web search server to enable
users to search an entire server on the LAN for documents based on
title and/or content using pre-specified metadata. To enable this to
work I must first be able modify the fields in the metadata and if
possible I also need to be able to force users to fill in the metadata
before word (or any other office app) will allow the document to save.

Thanks in adv.

MetaDataMiner Catalogue software can help you to adjust / update
metadata for Office files such as Word documents
You will be able to modify or set standard and customized summary
information to predefined values.

If, by metadata, you mean document properties, including custom document
properties, these can be accessed manually from Windows. Using vb or vba you
can access them but you need a special dll installed. Search on the MVP
website for "document properties" and you'll find an article that explains
how to do this.

See the MVP FAQ: <URL: http://www.mvps.org/word/> which is awesome!
