I am at wit's end: My computer was just returned from service with
"new"motherboard, hard drive, keyboard, mouse and dvd drive. It stil
has one of the problems it had before - the cursor, only now it freeze
quite often and I need to use to power button to shut it down. Tec
support tells me I need to use the Recovery Disks and if machine i
o.k. then it is a software problem and my warrantee is expired and the
will charge me. It took me over a week to put all my files and program
back, I cannot face that again. Can someone give me some help and o
advice? I would be sincerely gratefull. I am totally lost compute
wise when something goes wrong

Did they replace all the items you listed or just the Motherboard ?

When you say "Freeze" do you mean that all activity halts or just
that the mouse pointer will not move. When this happens can you
press and Hold Control & Alternate with one hand and then press
Delete once. This should bring up the options box, where you can
access TaskMgr.

A halt like that can be anything from a defective/marginal Power
Supply to the Video card/Driver. Given the limited scope of your
description, it's not easy to provide suggestions.

Is this a commercial PC, from the likes of Dell, HP or something
built by a small shop ?

By the way, I would request a refund for any work done thus far.
Whenever responsible parties cannot resolve/fix an issue the next
thing they do is "Shift-the-Blame".

What specific problems did you take your computer in for service for?
Please be specific.

Why was the motherboard replaced?

If they replaced the motherboard, drive, keyboard, mouse, etc.... if
they didn't reinstall XP, then there was likely nothing wrong and it was
either a driver issue or something causing your CPU to spike and make
your mouse appear to lockup.

Please tell us what specific problems your computer had before it went
in for service, what ones it STILL has.

Also, right click on the Task Bar in a clear area, select TASK MANAGER,
select the PERFORMANCE TAB, now we need to know a couple things:

Physical Memory (K) - TOTAL = ?????
Physical Memory (K) - AVAILABLE = ?????

CPU Usage: What is the high/low spikes over 1 minute, what does it
appear to average while you are not doing anything except watching it?

Do you connect to the Internet vial DSL/Cable? If so, do you have some
form of NAT Router (Linksys, D-Link, Netgear) or are you directly
connected to your cable/dsl modem?

Are you running any personal firewall software?
