I just upgraded Windows XP Media Center edition to Windows Vista Home
Premium. The upgrade went fine on my second attempt AFTER I uninstalled
McAfee Security Center and McAfee Virus scanner. However, I noticed that my
cursor has a tendency to jump all over the place. I went to the Synaptics
website and downloaded the most recent driver that's supposed to work with
Vista, but I'm still having the problem. Any idea how to solve this
problem? Thanks.

When your mouse cursor is jumping around... check your CPU usage in Task
Manager. If it's HIGH than look at "Processes" in Task Manager and see what
is using the excess CPU.
Sometimes in XP on various machines I would see very high CPU numbers on the
performance tab but nothing unusual on the Processes tab. So my suggestion
may or may not help you.
But re-booting usually helps. Then pay attention to what programs you've
used prior to the mouse skipping around you display.

OK I know this is stupidly obvious but is it a cordless mouse and if so are
the batteries fresh?

I found my touchpad to be extremely sensitive in Vista. I had to turn it
off. While typing just brushing it with my palm would cause the cursor to
jump to a different area of the screen. I never really used it much
preferring to use a wireless mouse instead so turning it off wasn't an
imposition. Hopefully Synaptics will come with a newer driver soon.

It's because part of your hand is touching the touchpad.

Most laptops have a way of toggling off the touchpad. Usually the function
[FN] key plus another key [usually some icon indicating a touchpad]. When
you got to type, turn off the touchpad. This precludes the mouse pointer
moving from inadverent touching of the touchpad by the meat of the thumb or
some other part of the hand.

I'm having the same problem.. I'm not on a laptop, but a desktop (on
Ultimate), and my mouse is an optical mouse..

hmmmm...

Try blowing on the sensor at the bottom. This happens when there is a
little fluff or fibres there.

I'm sure the people that have started complaining of the same thing recently
are not that stupid to not have thought about that. There has been some
Windows Update in the last couple of weeks that is causing this I expect.

:)

Good explanation, but I am not convinced - IMHO it could also be that
they've been getting around to typing things with their new Christmas
laptops [instead of just websurfing and installing apps] and are letting
their hands touch the touchpad inadvertently as they type - which send the
mouse all over whereever which messes up the typing.

You describe the exact problem i am experiencing.i installed vista last
december,i also tried to seek for a compatible driver but failed, and still
run the default microsoft driver.please get me if anything breaks p

Your explanation makes a lot of sense to me: microsoft is responsible.i did
not notice this problem until early februry while i installed vista in nov
2007

I'm having the same problem - I've had it on and off since early Feb. At it's
worst it's completely impossible to use the machine.

I have two mice - an old ball mouse with a cable, and a logitech optical
cordless mouse. They both do it. The mouse pointer repeatedly flicks over to
the extreme right of the screen - it stays at the same height, so it must
only be the x-coordinate that is being corrupted. It happens when I am just
sitting back looking at the computer, not touching the keyboard or the mouse,
so it's definitely not me. I've tried using different keyboards too, in case
there was something stuck under a key or something.

I am also having this problem. I am using a brand new desktop (so it's
not a touch pad issue), a wired optical mouse( so it's not a battery
issue). The mouse is not usb, so perhaps that is the problem, but it is
what came with the computer.:(

What brand is it? I'll be sure not to get one.
