currency style applied to cell changes numbers to ###. How fix?

I am formatting an accts rec'ble worksheet. one cell will not accept
application of currency style format - the numbers 12345.00 change to
####. How do I debug and fix it?
 
Move your cursor to the column headings. If you column is say Col E, then
move the cursor to between Cols E and F, and when the shape changes,
doubleclick to widen the column.
