Hi Folks,

I am running IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633IS on WIndows XP Pro
Version 2002, Service Pack 1.

Whenever I try to find text in a webpage (CTRL+F or Edit->Find), I get
prompted to enter my search text, but when I hit enter or click on
"Find Next", I receive an error window with the title "Microsoft
Internet Explorer" that reads:

***

An error has occurred in this dialog.

Error: 49
Interface not registered

***

Another symptom of this problem is that whenever IE opens a new window
to load a page, the window opens, but it just kind of "hangs"
there...no content gets loaded into the new window, no white screen,
no timeout, nothing. The frame of the new window appears, but the
content from the old window shows through it, like the new window
hasn't been painted on the screen yet.

I have seen a lot of errors similar to this that mention "incompatible
RPC stub", but this seems to be a different error. One of the
symptoms of that error is the file dispex.dll having the wrong version
number. Mine has the correct version number. For reference, the
"bad" version number is 5.6.0.8515 and the "good" version number is
5.6.0.6626.

I can see that the files mscomctl.oca and shdocvw.oca were last
modified around the time that things started screwing up.
Unfortunately, I don't have a record of anything that was installed
that day, so I don't know what might have messed up those files. Does
anyone have any reference that shows that the above named *.oca files
may cause the problem? If so, please post the URL.

I have also read about oleaut32.dll possibly causing the problem, but
again, I have the correct version number for that file as well.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I'd love to get some input
about this rather than make next weekend's project be a complete
backup and restore of the system.

Many thanks in advance,
Rick
