Mikael

Hello,

Does anyone know how to issue a CTRL+ALT+DEL command via
a remote assistance connection? I need to get past the
screen saver logon in the "novice" machine.

Thanks,

Mikael

Aron,

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't work. I get no
response with CTRL+ALT+END. Does anyone have any other
suggestions?

Thanks,

Mikael

Greg,

Thanks for the suggestion, but CTRL+ALT+INSERT doesn't
work. I get no response with it. Does anyone else have
any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Mikael

Thanks for your suggestion, but CTRL ALT END doesn't
work. I've tried CTRL ALT: INSERT; HOME; END; PAGE UP;
PAGE DOWN; BACKSPACE; SHIFT; TAB; CAPS LOCK; TAB.

Has anyone actually done this before?

I have discovered that "Remote Assistance" on XP Pro,
when the "novice" asks and approves assistance from
the "expert," is somewhat different than how Win2k does
things.

I can imagine your problem!

Remote assistance REQUIRES an interactive user sitting at the workstation
to, for example, allow you to take control of the machine.

If it is sitting at a screensaver, it sounds as though that element (the
interactive user) isn't there?

Remote Desktop does not require an interactive user.

Say a bit more about what you're trying to do?

I engaged someone at the 'novice' workstation to allow me
to take control. I've taken control. The person leaves
for the day and the screen goes into screen lock mode. I
want to check on the novice workstation's processes, but
I cannot issue the CTRL+ALT+DEL to get past the screen
lock.

I would use Remote Desktop, but the administrative ID
that is allowed to use Remote Desktop is a network ID and
using it will kill the workstation's current user logon.
I want to avoid killing any of the current processes on
it. Thus, Remote Desktop is not an option.

Am I to understand that one cannot issue a CTRL+ALT+DEL
command via Remote Assistnace?

I'm afraid I can't test easily at the moment, but if CTRL-ALT-END doesn't do
the job, I suspect the answer is yes.

You can connect to an existing session (with RD) without disrupting running
processes if you can use the credentials of the existing user (i.e. that
user must be a member of the remote desktop users group and have a password
set.) This isn't easy to arrange in many corporate security environments,
however.

Thanks, Al!

I just tested this on my home LAN between two XP Pro boxes. In fact you can *NOT* use the
<Ctrl.<Alt><End> key sequence to access the Novice desktop. You need to know the Novice user Id and
password. The <Ctrl.<Alt><Del> sequence brought up the Task Manager for the Expert box.
