Usually when using this key combo I get Task Manager popping up.

Recently though I have been getting the Windows Security box on my screen -
giving the six options of Lock Computer, Log Off, etc.

Obviously something has interefered with some settings somewhere. Can anyone
give fairly detailed instrucitons about how I can restore my pc to its
previous behaviour?

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Steve,

This behavior is normal when Welcome Screen is disabled in the Control Panel User Accounts.

In Win9x, Ctrl-Alt-Del brings up a "dumb" task manager.

In WinNT/Win2K/XP, it brings up the one with the options
you see.

I don't recall seeing the "normal" TaskManager from Win2k/
WinXP popping up directly. Maybe it's a selectable option
somewhere?

Ah, I see others have supplied the right answer. I disabled
the welcome screen early on, so never saw that behavior.

Mike

Actually, I find it slightly obsolete in XP & don't understand why they
didn't remove that triple-key function.
It's much easier just to rt-clk on a blank part of the Taskbar & go straight
to 'Task Manager'

OK, lots of helpful stuff.

I've gone to Control Panel - Use Accounts and attempted to turn the WElcome
Screen back on.

I get a message saying that some software I've installed has disabled Fast
User Switching and Welcome Screen and am directed to a file "ginamsi.dll".

This sounds like a product of me recently updating my MSI Mainboard - I
downloaded several things and installed some utilities. Which one of the
pieces of software that I installed is causing the problem? Or should I just
go through and unistall all of them?

Delete the GinaDLL value in the registry.

Ramesh, thanks for the link to that article - I had tried renaming the
ginamsi.dll file to ginamsi.old but that really screwed things up!

I'll get into regedit and delete that entry and hope to solve the problem.

To start Task Manager:

Ctrl + Alt + Delete
Ctrl + Shift + Esc
Right click the Taskbar | Task Manager
Start | Run | Type: taskmgr | OK
Create a Desktop Shortcut to taskmgr.exe

I happen to use Ctrl + Alt + Delete

Yes. The value itself needs to be deleted.

All seems to be back to normal.

I can see why you've got MVP status!

Do you have much knowledge of installing Roxio software under Windows XP? If
so you might be able to solve another problem - why does XP go into a bot

Thanks Steve. Not used Roxio much, but the reboot loop is probably due to Roxio filter driver. For best advice on Roxio products, you could try this question in their support forum here: http://boards.support.roxio.com/roxio

Before doing so, to make sure if Roxio is causing the problem. Uncheck "Automatically Restart" entry as said in this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320299&Product=winxp (Try from Safe Mode). Next time onwards, the system won't reboot but will show you a blue screen with the driver / filename causing the problem.

As ever Ramesh I am most grateful.

I'll follow your advice and see where it gets me.

For the moment I've uninstalled Roxio - but still neither of my CD / DVD
drives will write to discs - so perhaps some other underlying problem there?

To use the XP's native CD burning support, start the IMAPI service, and enable recording in the Drive properties.

Right, that may be where the problem was!

I had visited the properties for each of the drives and made sure that
recording was enabled there - but it made no difference.

I visited Services and looked at the IMAPI entry - only to fin it was set to
start manually. I've changed that to automatic and will re-start my system
shortly to see if things have improved!

Once again - a huge thank you!

Mm, interesting. Looking in Mt Computer and checking the Properties for each
of the drives it seems that I cannot "enable CD recording on this drive" for
both drives at the same time.

I select one, the other deselects - I select the other and the one
de-selects. That seems weird!
