What-a-Tool

Have 2 computers both running XP pro connected with a crossover cable.
Ran network setup wizard - as "Other - This computer is part of a network
that does not have an internet connection"

WorkGroup name "Test"

TCP/IP properties of connection:
IP Address:168.168.168.168(comp 2) to 168.168.168.169(comp 2)
SubnetMask:255.255.0.0(Both)
Default Gateway:192.192.192.192 (Both)
Use following DNS Server addresses:
Blank

Computer 1 shows itself in My Network places under workgroup "Test", but
cannot find any other computers in the workgroup.

Computer 2, when I click workgroup "Test", gives me an error message:
"Test is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
recourse. YaDa YaDa YaDa..."

Can anyone give me a clue what I'm doing wrong and need to change here? I
have about 4 gb of files I want to back up before a HD Format. Spent more
time messing around trying to get these 2 comps connected than it would have
taken me to format 10 cds and burn the data. I'm going out of my mind trying
to get this to work.

HELP - Please

Subnet mask to:255.255.255.0
Default gateway to:blank

You have your subnet and default gateway in two different networks, try
this:

Computer 1:
IP 192.168.168.168 (although I would use 192.168.0.100)
SNM: 255.255.0.0 (although I would use 255.255.255.0)
GW: Leave blank

Computer 2:
IP 192.168.168.169 (although I would use 192.168.0.101)
SNM: 255.255.0.0 (although I would use 255.255.255.0)
GW: Leave blank

Now, reboot both computers.

Now ping computer 1 from computer 2, if it works you in business.
