cross-referencing

If I put a page break before a table caption, when I cross-reference this table it puts a page break
in the cross-reference and hence messes up all the formatting.
I have tried just putting returns in instead of page breaks but these end up in my cross-reference also.
I have checked to make sure these returns are just normal text , rather that in caption style and this is the case.
Has anyone any suggestions as to how I might fix this?
Thanks amillion if you do!

Page breaks always take on the format of the following paragraph. If you
format the first row of the table as "Page break before," you won't have
this problem. For other approaches, see
