Cross-ref font size different than style in which they're embedded

I've got a bunch of table/figure xrefs in a doc. The style in which they
appear is Word's native Body Text with a 12pt font. Some of the xrefs are
sized 10 points vs. the 12 point Body Text style.

If I select them and revert them (CTRL+Spacebar), their size is corrected;
however, this does not "stick," and they are returned to 10 point some time
later.

How do I correct this?

Thanks...

Press Alt+F9 to display field codes. Your cross-references would look
similar to { REF _Ref161026755 }. Add the \* CHARFORMAT switch to the
end of each REF field code. Press Alt+F9 again to hide field codes.
Then update the fields by selecting them and pressing F9.
