Critical Upgrades for Windows XP

I get to the Microsoft website listing upgrades, a search
is made, critical upgrades identified, individual OR
groups of upgrades are selected and downloaded, the
dowload appears to occur, but the computer stalls at
installation. Have tried several different upgrades,
both singaly and in groups. Same result. Why won't the
downloaded upgrade install? What do I need to do?

I am having the EXACT same problem!! It has me so
frustrated that I am wondering just "how important is it
that we do these upgrades"? Can you please let me know
anything you find out. I would really appreciate it.
