My update notification tells me that I need

"Critical Update for Office XP on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB885884)
Date last published: 10/12/2004
Download size: 4.3 MB
This update resolves an issue affecting only customers deploying the
MS04-028 update for Office XP on Windows XP SP2..."

However, I don't actually have Office XP - I have Office 2000 SP3 instead
(on Win XP SP2).
Can this update notification be right?

Hi

Most likely because you have this Office XP key in your registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\InstallRoot\

For this update, this is the one thing that Windows Update checks for.

Note that this registry key is not deleted if you uninstall Office XP,
so you could actually get this Office update offered even without
having Office installed at all, as long as some Office XP component
have previously been installed (and then uninstalled).

Hi,

It identifies you as a recipient because of your version of Windows, not
Office, see:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-028.mspx

To be honest, I didn't really understand that page. It doesn't list O2K or
WinXP SP2 as "affected". Nor do I have any of the other software listed
there - on the contrary, it lists WinXP SP2 as "non affected". I would like
to understand what's going on, please.

I've never had Office XP installed. Only O2K and WinXP SP2. So - do I still
need the download? (cf my post above). Thanks.

Hi

1)
If you start regedit.exe, do you find this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\InstallRoot\
(note especially the 10.0 part)

2)
If so, is it a "Path" value under that key?

3)
If the "Path" value exists, does it point to a folder that exists
and contains some files and folders?

Hi, under the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\InstallRoot\ (I
noted the 10.0 part especially) there are ONLY the following two entries:
(Default) (value not set)
InstallCount 0x00000004 (4)

No Path value or anything else.
But I do have entries under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\8.0 and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0
There is no InstallRoot\Path under 8.0.
There IS a InstallRoot\Path under 9.0: C:Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\
This is where my Office files are located.

There are versions of this update for other versions of Office too. You
should get the one for 2000 - go to
http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/officeupdate/CD010224971033.aspx

In Office click Updates and then download the one for KB 822035 (second
item down right now)

Hi
Because the key exists on your computer, the update is offered to you.
I have tried to convince someone at Microsoft that they need to check
for the existence of the Path value under that key, and not the
existence of the key only. Hopefully, they are looking into it now.

Why do I have this key when I don't have Office XP installed you might
ask.

The "problem" is that an uninstallation of Office XP is that it doesn't
delete the key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\InstallRoot\
(but it deletes the Path value under it).

As you have no Path value under that key, you do not have any Office XP
components installed, and I suggest you just delete the key path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\ (make a backup by
exporting the key to a file first in case you have any problems after
the delete, even if it is very unlikely.)

This way you will be sure that you will not be offered any Office XP
updates anymore.

Thanks for your help. I'll delete the key path as suggested.
It still leaves the question where it comes from, since I never, ever, had
an Office XP installation on my system. Maybe from another component like
Media Player, Outlook Express? It's not urgent, since it's now clear I don't
need the key. Again, thanks!

Hi

I don't know what have put it in there, but I'm pretty sure it is not
Media Player or Outlook Express (but Outlook 2002 would I think).
