I just built a new computer and have installed XP Pro. How can I create a
system restore disk for the inevitable day that the hard drive crashes and I
have to reload everything? Thanks for your help.

The XP installation CD performs this function. It's bootable and has
several repair options including the recovery console and and a repair
installation. There is no system restore disk, per se.

THanks for the speedy response, but if my hard drive crashes I would like to
be able to put in two or three CDs and restore all my programs without
reinstalling everything. Is this possible? If so, how? Thanks.

It's possible only if you use inaging software to make an image
of the entire drive,

But chances are that if you image to CDs, it will be many more
than just two or three.

:

Imaging software, such as Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, BootItNg.
There is no inbuilt feature for this - the NTbackup solution wiht ASR is
not one I recommend.

There are plenty of backup programs that you can use to backup all or
folders of choice--you can have them update manually or automatically, and
incrementally if you want after your initial full backup of a folder.
Configure the destination to the CD drive then burn them when it tells you
there are files ready for
cd.

If it is only one folder you can also copy the whole folder to CD(s). Use
CDRWs and you can update it as you add/remove programs.

This might help some.

You'll need:

Original OS CD-Rom,(W2000pro, XPany flavor or Server 2003).
Iso- buster,
Burning software,(I use Nero 6.0)

Use ISObuster to extract bootfiles from CD.
Dump files from XPdisk to folder on hard drive.
Export any registry tweaks to a folder in the same folder you dumped
your XPfiles.
Save your drivers in a folder in the same folder you dumped your
XPfiles. (WinDriver Ghost is a good util for this)
Save any toolbars and cleanup utils in a folder in the same folder you
dumped your XPfiles.
Burn all together with whatever burning software you're using.
NOTE! I recommend using Hitman Pro 2 as a spyware utility.
Why? Because when you install it, It downloads, installs, updates and
runs the following programs automatically:
CWshredder
Spyware blaster
Ad Aware SE
Spyware doctor
Spybot search and destroy
Spyware sweeper (I don't use this one because it runs a process TSR)
Hitman Anti spyware.

Keep in mind:
Space on the finished CDrom.(Don't over burn)
Unattended install (Answer file)If you know how.

This isn't automatic, but everything is on one CDrom and you just need
to go into each folder and click away! My time went from 3.5 hrs doing
a manual install to about 1hr 15min including registry work!
I use this method for setting up a "restore disk" for others. They buy
the OS, I use there original and make them a Semi-Restore disk. So far,
Everyone I've done this for is very happy with the results.

Good luck!

If you wanna have loads of fun you could create an autostart to launch a
batch file that'll run it all ;-)
