Is there a way of creating the System Disk without going through ASR? And
how do I update it (as the Windows Update patches say)? I've done a fairly
exhaustive search of Help and Support and can't find anything.

There is no startup disk per se. Different alternatives for different
situations are available.

--The XP CD is bootable

--Windows Explorer can create a MS-DOS boot floppy (it's one of the Format
options)

--There's a multiple disk set for running XP setup:

--And a single disk that can be used to boot to the operating system:

I'm not talking about a BOOT disk, this is the SYSTEM disk which is created
when ASR is completed, and that you are told to update when installing
Windows Update patches.
