I want to make sure that the restore points I create
include all the data on PC. Page 277 of "Step by Step
Microsoft Windows XP" shows a screen with an option to
backup all data and create a recovery CD. I follow the
step from "all Programs" - "Accessories" - "Create
Restore Point" but I never get the option dialog box
asking what I want to backup.

A restore point does not backup everything on the pc. Personal files and
such don't get included. Restore points are used to set the computer back to
a day before a problem arose. Not for backing up windows or data.
I think you want xp backup in the system tools folder on xp pro. On xp home
it has to be installed from xp home cd.

System Restore isn't a backup solution. It won't do what you want. Look
at something like SecondCopy from www.centered.com or Back Up My PC
from Veritas.

You have a big book that explains all of this, and you
have the XP help system, that also explains it, all in
plain, no-brainer, allegedly idiot-proof language, and
still you can't grasp a very simple concept. Give up
the PC and get yourself an Etch-A-Sketch.
