Hi,

Windows XP automatically creates LPT1 as an "ECP Printer Port". Is there
anyway to get XP to create this port as a standard LPT port "Non ECP"?

Thank you

Preferred Answer:
Since XP blocks applications from accessing ports directly, having an LPT
printer port doesn't offer many advantages over an ECP port.
To make the printer port look like an LPT port to applications (which I
assume is what you're after), open your printer's properties box. In
Ports, make sure LPT1 is checked. Now when applications open LPT1, they
can now print to your printer.

Alternate Answer:
If you really want XP to see a physical LPT port (ie. have it in Device
Manager): it will have to be done at the Bios level. Somewhere in the Bios
(For Award Bioses it's in "Chipset Features Setup") there will be an
option called Parallel Port Mode. It will be one of: SPP, EPP, ECP,
EPP+ECP. To remove ECP mode, switch to EPP mode (or SPP mode if EPP
doesn't work).

Ask your computer vendor how to change these options.

WARNING: Check with your manufacturer before attempting this. If you make
a mistake with the bios setup, you may cause irreparable damage to your
computer.
