While I understand the replies given to others regarding the same problem....
I am not sure WHICH file association to set up. I am helping a friend who
just purchased a pc with Vista (I have XP) I have been sending her 'lessons'
via e-mail that I have written in either Word 2007 (.docx) or as a text file.
Can you please tell me what to do to make sure she can read these e-mail
attachments? Is there a certain association that would be the default and
would handle the issue? is there a certain format I should save these file
lessons in? Would really appreciate some help with this. Never expereienced
this problem on previous operating systems, and onviously I am having trouble
with the In's and Out's of Vista right now. TIA

Does your client have Word 2007 on her PC? If not, then I would
recommend you save the files in Word 97-2003 Format as there are many
more applications that can open that format rather than the new docx format.

Another option is to get the XPS-PDF plugin for Word 2007 and save the
file as a PDF document. You can download this add-on at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...11-3e7e-4ae6-b059-a2e79ed87041&DisplayLang=en.
These can be read using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Thank you so very much! I thought about using an older vesion of Word, but
wasn't sure that was the answer! I will download the reader you suggested as
well. thanks so much for the fast reply!

A file association, without the corresponding program to open the file, is
meaningless. If the recipient does not have Microsoft Word installed on
their computer you can send them this link to download the Microsoft Word
Viewer.

Please note that in using the Viewer you can not alter the file. You can
only view the file.

Another option would be to install Open Office 2.0.1 (free) on the
recipients computer. This will allow both viewing and altering the files.
There "may" be some formatting compatibility problems.

Use word Pad

No need to change any association, just save the document as a .txt
file regardless what application you use to write it that will remove
any fancy formatting so she can open it in her application of choice
and cross platform too I would think.

If you wrote the message in rich text format or some other format when
you save it as a simple .txt file almost all applications will warn
you that you are about to lose your special formatting, which you
probably don't want anyway for something like this.
