creating a logical partition

Hi, I'm attempting to create logical partition on my drive as per the
Windows XP Help and Support Center directions on my computer. Problem is
that when I go to do it via the Windows interface, the option to "create new
drive" (or something like that) just isn't there. I still have tons of space
left on the C: drive (not sure if that matters), but am completely mising
the option to create the new drive.

I also tried it via the command promt and kept getting an error message even
though I followed it to the letter.

Thanks!

To define a new partition you need free space that is not
yet part of any partition. Having lots of unused space in
C: does not count, it is not free, it is part of C:

How can I make that space free? That's the part that I guess I was confused
on...but the Windows Help Center didn't explain any of that.

The "space" would have had to be left on purpose during
previous partition session/s. Unless you have
Partition Magic or similar SW, all you can do I think
is backup, reformat the whole thing the way you want
it, and then restore everything. If you can afford PM,
it's worth the money.

Thanks. I don't get it though. When I had Windows 95, I was able to
partition like it was going out of style. I had a C: and D: drive (the E:
was my CD-ROM). So now I'd have to purchase separate software for Windows XP
to be able to partition a drive?

I just suggest if we had new Harddrive or blank harddrive, the better way
use fdisk of windows 98 startup disk to made partitions. I think that is
convenience tools. unfortunately, Sometimes we had OS pre-instaled in
machine, so that we need specialization tool to crack this problem.

You do not need special tools, you just need to plan
ahead. Even with the Dos family to change a large
partition into two smaller ones you needed to destroy
the larger first, or use third party tools. Nothing has
really changed.
