I would like to schdule a backup to run overnight.
I would like to selectively choose which directories should be saved and
then 'copy' them to my DVD drive. How can I do this?

How about buying a backup program?

BTW, many if not most backup programs won't schedule a backup to DVD
because user intervention is anticipated.

Firestreamer from Cristalink is an add-on for ntbackup ( the Microsoft
Backup Utility) that allows ntbackup to use DVD's as if they were a tape
drive. They have a 30 day free trial.

A backup program that does what you want is called NovaBackup

http://www.novastor.com/pcbackup/backup/novabackup_new.html

I have used both programs. They work as advertised. Both companies were
quick to respond to email support. Even more important they solved the
issues I was having.

Thank you all for your useful comments
