Create popup word definitions on click

I'd like to enhance certain words in an online technical word document such that when you click on them you get a definition for the term, either by unhiding a section of adjacent text (like in the help system) or by displaying a little popup window with the definition in it (like on many web sites). I've looked at hyperlinks, smart tags, and hide/display text and haven't figured out how to do it. Can anyone tell me how to make it happen
