Create an Association?

Today I signed up to the discussion group at my university and received an
e-mail with a link for e-mail address confirmation. When I clicked the link,
I get a message saying that Windows doesn't recognize the file that created
the message and I need to set up an association. For a link? We're not
talking about opening a message or running a program. It's just a link! It is
not a big deal, however, as it has happened twice previously and in each case
I have contacted the webmaster and within 24 hours have received a message
telling me my log-in data is now accepted. I'm just curious as to whether
this is a problem with web sites not being totally compatible with Vista or
does it have to do with the mail application the sender is using, such as
Firefox? Or, does it have to do with the fact that I have my mail set to
receive in plain text rather that HTML? If anyone has run into this situation
or has an answer, please drop me a line.
In the meantime, y'all have a good one.

If you have Windows mail configured to read all messages in plain
text, then any embedded links are not likely to work.

Hi Gary:
Thanks for the info. I rather suspect that was the problem. I am trying to
get the university to resend the link so I can try it again. If it doesn't
work this time I'll be back in the forum. Either way, thanks for the
response. It was much appreciated.

If you saved that message, you should be able to open it again in
a non-plain-text mode.

Hi Gary:
I saved the message, but it still won't open. In fact, I just received a
reply to an inquiry on another issue at another site and I get the same
response on it. So far I can work around the problem by returning to the
forum site, but I would like to get the program workng properly. Again,
thanks for your efforts on my behalf.

Make sure Windows Mail has all three defaults.

Thanks for the reply Frank. I opened up the Windows Mail general options and
the default tabs are greyed-out. I assume this means I am set to default.

Hi Gary:
I went into the associations folder in the control panel as suggested and I
get a message saying the program has all its defaults and each of the three
parts shows Windows Mail as the default application. Just to be sure, I gave
save a click and went back to try a link. Still no luck. Once again, I really
do appreciate the time you, and the other people who have replied, have taken
to assist me with this glitch.

See if you can use the illustrated directions here:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/83185-windows-mail-default-associations.html

Check your settings in Windows Mail:
Tools, Options, Read: uncheck "Read all messages in plain text."
On the Security tab: select Internet zone rather than Restricted sites
zone. Also uncheck "Block images..."

Hi Gary:
The problem is resolved. I got a message from another source from a guy
running XP and as soon as I read it the light lit. When your brain starts
looking for obscure problems it overlooks the obvious. I did not have IE set
as my default browser nor was the notification box checked. DuuuuH! At any
rate, your yeoman efforts on my behalf are very musch appreciated and I hope
you don't run into idiots like me too often.
