I am new to the Computor world and have a question .I believe I might have
picked up a virus in the last couple of days . Some of my programs work ok
and others won't work at all . The ones that wont work lock up my machine or
reboot the machine by itself as soon as I open them . I am trying to restore
my computor to where it was when I bought it it is a Hp brand and I
understand that the restore software is on the hard drive not on a cd . Where
would I find it and how would I get it to work? Thanks for your time and
your help!!!!!!!!!!!

Reboot the computer and when the first HP screen comes up hit F10 and it
should take you to System Recovery.

I have an HP Pavilion, 7100 series. Here is how it's done on mine:
Left click on Start, then left-click on "Control Panel."
Left click on "Performance & Maintenance."
When the "Performance & Maintenance" screen comes up, left click on "System
Restore" on the left side of the screen.
Select "Restore My Computer to An Earlier Time" and left click "Next." You
will get a calendar screen which will give you the opportunity to restore
your system to selected previous date. If you have a good idea when problem
started you will want to restore your settings to a date immediately before
that. Then left click "Next" and follow the directions.
That having been said, if you have a virus, doing a system restore may not
work. If you have anti-virus software make sure it's up to date and run it to
see if that's the problem.

Good luck!

There are two types of Restore that you can perform.

Thje first is most damaging, in that you use the System Recovery CDs
supplied by HP [or the files on your Hard Drive if no CDs] to reset the hard
drive to 'factory fresh' condition.

Check in the user manual or view the instructions on HPs web site.

The second, least damaging is to use Windows System restore to set the
System registry back to a prior state [on as a day, week or month prior to
the current date]. This will effectively remove all changes to registry made
between the two dates. It does not remove other files from your PC.

You should attempt to perform a full virus scan and spyware removal: after
that run system restore. Again for a belt and braces approach, do a full
virus scan and spyware removal after you reboot the PC on completion of the
Restore.
