My desktop shows in the left part of the screen as if it were a common
folder, but it´s just the desktop! folder tasks, etc. And the quick launch
bar icons are all messed up... What has happened? I think some spyware
removal tool (not very reliable) has messed with the register...... How do I
get to get it right? Is my Pc suffering some kind of evil spell?

In the Registry at
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00021400-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\shellex\ExtShellFolderViews\{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}\PersistMoniker
make sure that the value data reads
file://%userappdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt

I have been trying to get a handle on how to sort or change the layering
aspects of the Active Desktop objects but am stimied by its persistence to
change all my modification attempts to the desktop.htt file back to the
previous state ... I guess it just doesn't like me.

I've noticed that this registry key exist on my system as well as you stated
of its existance however, I cannot seem to resolve the %userappdata% system
location and am wondering if this is inherantly wrong and should be changed
to %userprofile%\Application Data ..

I've been testing the functionality by using a link to a text file in that
location.
file://%userappdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\brndlog.txt
&
file://%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\brndlog.txt
Only the later can resolve ... no need to change '\' with '/' as IE seems to
work out these little quirks :?

I've searched the registry over and cannot locate any further reference to
the %userappdata% locale ... what are your suggestions?
