Hello all

I am about to chuck my computer out!!

The last couple of weeks have been crazy

Here is the problem
I have Win XP Home, Athlon XP 2000, 512 MB RAM, GeForce
I turn the computer on, sometimes it starts...then the mouse will freeze (everything freezes), so i hit the restart. Then the computer will not do anything...the lights on the front (power and HDD) just light up and sit there, while the fan is still spinning. Nothing comes up on the screen. I go through this (hitting restart and completely shuting down) 6, 7, 8, 9 maybe 10 times - it is random), then all of a sudden it may boot up...!!! After this, it may or may not work properly. Once it is on, it seems to be ok (sometimes)
I originally suspected a virus got through norton...but an online scan doesn't seem to produce anything...then i thought maybe windows died...so i reinstalled it (without wiping everything). That seemed to work for about 5 days!! And has started up again. Oh, and sometimes when i am in the start/restart phase :( , the computer will start by itself even though it was turned off!!
So, any boffins out there with a good suggestion (even smashing it with a bat is acceptable)

Thank
Jester

please...do not "chuck" it...donate to a charity in your area....they
probably can get a nerd to straighten it out...and it'll make you feel good
too...donating to a worthy caus....you might need those points in future
years...think about it...

do you have an always on connection?

If so you could well have a virus and have picked it up again after a few
days. Many viruses can "hide" from AV software if they load first so an
online scan will not help

it could also be heat related too you don't mention the brand of computer.

Check the event viewer to see if anything is listed there that may explain
the reason for freezing!

go to start run type eventvwr

that should give you some clues or you can at least post error messages
here!

In addition to the possibility of the cpu overheating, it could also be a
problem with the memory cards (dimms), or any of the expansion cards not
being inserted properly. When it happens again, you might want to remove
all the cards and re-install them, starting with all the *necessary* cards
only. If the problem goes away, try installing another card - and continue
until the problem re-occurs, or until all the cards have been re-installed.
If the problem re-occurs, then you know there is a fault on that particular
expansion board. If it doesn't re-occur, then it is either an intermittent
fault anywhere else (which is a pain in the ass) (eg: cpu overheating), or
one of the cards simply wasn't inserted properly.

Chances are, if you're anything like me, and you take your temper out on
your poor computer, instead of Windows, the cards could quite possibly have
loosened up a bit. ;-) I have to do this on a weekly basis. :-)
