My curiosity is killing me. I've been using WindowsXP for months and cannot
understand what that "crashing" sound effect is that I hear periodically and
randomly. Can anyone explain it to me?

I have no idea what sound you mean, but the first place to start is in
Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices, on the Sounds tab. Scroll through
all the events and play the sounds associated with each to see if you can
find it.

? The HDD being accessed?

Already scrolled through Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices and couldn't
find the sound. Some people describe this sound as one of a door slamming.
In any case, it's a loud, unexpected, crashing or slamming sound. I can't
believe that other people have not heard it when using Windows XP.

Not so hard to believe; it's not part of XP.

Struggling to understand this! Is the sound coming through your
speakers?

Assuming its coming from the speakers and not the case could it be the
recycle bin emptying?

The only other thing that springs to mind is the office assistant noises in
MS Office if you have it.

:o)

The recycle bin emptying sounds the most plausible, although I didn't think
that a user needed to know when that was happening (I don't think there was
that kind of notification in previous Windows versions.) As to the HDD being
accessed, the sound occurs too randomly for it to be that. And, yes, the
sound is definitely part of WindowsXP.

Forgot to say that I don't think it's the MS Word Office Assistant because I
don't use it. And the "sound" occurs independently of whether I'm using MS
Word or not.

I can remember mine making that noise as far back as win 98. It only does it
when I manually empty it.

Windows messenger or msn messenger make a variety of odd sounds as well.

I get very iritated if I can't find a cause to an odd noise.

Do you have yahoo messenger running?
This sounds like the same noise that occurs when a friend exits yahoo
messenger
or any kind of chat program?

If it's a door slamming, it probably is someone who has signed on via aol or
some other agency has signed off.. Do you have an im installed?

Unfortunately not all programs use the standard technique to produce sounds,
so you don't see everything there.

I can't believe that other people have not heard it
when using Windows XP.

Almost certainly, it's a third-party program producing this sound, not
Windows XP, and that's why I haven't heard it.

I have IM available as part of AOL but I don't have it running. As for
messenger programs (Yahoo, MSN or Windows), I don't think I have one running,
but I'm really not sure what "messenger programs" are. I did check the
"sound" on the Control Panel for recycle bin emptying, but it wasn't the
"crashing" or "door slamming" sound I heard. I don't believe it's a
third-party program that's responsible because I hear this sound on other
users' computers who use XP. I'm pretty sure everyone using XP has heard it
at one time or another, but, other people describe it in terms other than
"crashing" or "door slamming." And, yes, it is irritating not to know the
cause of and odd noise. Especially this one.

Sounds like ...\AOL 9.0\Sounds\BuddyOut.wav.

Undoubtedly other users who have the same particular third-party program
installed as you do.

Not I, unless your description is way off.

If the sound definitely isn't one set up from within Control Panel -> Sounds and
Audio Devices -> Sounds tab, suggest you press CTRL + ALT + DELETE buttons on
your keyboard to check in Task Manager to see if any Applications or Processes
you have running could be the source.

That should tell you if you have any IM programs running.
