generally the computer shuts down during start up and
freezes occosionally during the proceedure, it also runs
the scan disk, it comes up with a dark blue screen with
pale blue text reporting a stop error, on one occasion it
reported a PFN-list-corrupt but mainly stop errors, it
sometimes does not even restart on power up and just
beeps itermittently, all these problems have occured
after a xp updates exercise including i think was a stop
start hotfix as recommended by the recent updates
messages. Q. is the computer unrepairable and as i bought
the xp home service pack 1a, can i install and run it on
a new pc and register it with MS without having to
purchase another XP home service pack 1a

many thanks in advance
phil

1. Depends upon how much time & energy you want to
invest. Have you tried an inplace repair of XP? How
about a re-format & re-install. I think Microsoft
provides free tech support for problems resulting from the
installation of hotfixes. I could be wrong. The phone
call is free. How much is your time worth?

Please provide 1 or more EXACT error messages.

What happens in safe mode?

Have you tried to slave your hard drive into a different
computer and scan for viruses? We can't always blame
Microsoft.

2. Yes. You may have to speak with a human at Microsoft
Product Activation. They encounter this type of problem
frequently.

It sounds like you have hardware problems.

If the computer is, in fact, un-repairable, and you purchased a RETAIL
version of Windows XP, the copy can be applied to another computer!
