I have had 7 bugcheck dumps in a row, and had to come up in safe mode. The
hex codes are 0X000000C2 (0X00000040, 0X00000000, 0X80000000, 0X00000000). I
have not added any new hardware or software lately. Any help would be
appreciated.

Hi Jerry,

Order a chkdsk /R for your system drive (usually C: of course).
Open a command prompt and type chkdsk /r and hit enter.
Answer 'y' to the prompt and re-boot.

If your machine comes up normally, open event viewer & look in the
application log for event ID 1001 (winlogon). Here you will find the results
of your check disk /r (= repair).

Good Luck

I did the chkdsk /R, and right after the system came back up I got the same
crash again (0X000000C2).

Jerry,

OK, then you may have a hardware failure. Disk, video card etc. You will
need to find out what went wrong.

Can you remove some of your RAM? Perhaps set the BIOS to "Fail safe
defaults" etc.

Getting tricky now.... Good luck!

Hi again,

I just noticed that it came up in safe mode... So; you can disable hardware
drivers in Device Manager to isolate things...
I suspect Video driver problems.

I went into device Manages and looked at the display adapter. When I said to
update the driver, I got a response that a better fit could not be found.

OK,

Just disable it - that will revert to VGA - you can still use the machine.
If that fixes it then uninstall any ATI or NVIDIA drivers etc.. But we are
guessing here... right...

It might be time to take it for repair - or re-install XP over the top of
the current installation?

If I reinstall over the current version, how much of what I currently have
on my C: drive is retained?

I was talking to Dell support, and they said I couldn't reinstall the
operating system without eraseing the c: dirve. Assuming they are wrong, I
tried installing from a copy of SP pro service pack 2. I was asked to enter
the key for the system (I don't have it since my system was installed by
Dell). Was I right that I could instal fro service pack 2 CD?
