My system crashed yesterday. I got the dreaded blue screen and could not get past it. I contacted my comp. manufacturers tech support and after various attempts at reinstalling XP and checking the registry they tell me that my only option is to format my hard drive and start from scratch. Obviously I am not looking forward to doing this and losing all my stuff. Any ideas or hints on how to save my data? I also have a laptop, is there software that will allow me to transfer from my desktop hard drive to my laptop before I format it?

You could take the hard drive out and put it in another computer and copy
the information. If your only option for another computer is your laptop,
you could go buy a USB enclosure and put your hard drive in that, attach it
to the laptop, and copy your files. Assuming your laptop has USB and will
read NTFS, if that's how your drive was formatted.
