is there any way to prevent cc deleting passwords?

Your passwords are cookies.
Once you have logged in to the site you want go into options - cookies and
move the url for the web site from the left pane (cookies to delete) to the
right pane (cookies to keep)

Yup, that seems to work.

While you're here why does it tell me to close Firefox, but NOT Seamonkey?

What versions of Firefox and CCleaner are you using?

Latest both,

Is Firefox still running in the background when you close it? IIRC
version 1.5.1 was supposed to stop this from happening.

Sorry no.
If Ffox alone is open it tells me to close it.
If SM alone is open it _doesn't_ tell me to close it.

On further investigation, cleaning with SM closed DOES produce a further
batch of files (5.6Mb in my case)
