CPU usage sporadically goes to 100%

I have been having a problem with my CPU usage going up
to 100%. I can't pinpoint any one process that is causing
the problem as it appears to be numerous processes that
may cause the problem and not always the same ones. Once
I reboot my PC it is OK for an hour or two but it happens
numerouse times a day. I am using Windows XP SP1 on a
Dell Inspiron 4150!

What troubleshooting programs are available to help to
pinpoint what is causing the problem?

Service Pack 2 is surely to fix your problem as this is

windows update!!!
