CPU usage 6% but system hangs

Hello All,

I have a compaq laptop with amd athlon 1600+ with 128 MB ram on it.

My system responds very slowly despite the fact that CPU usage shown
is 5-8% mostly.

How to i correct this problem??? do installing latets patches will
have any performance increase..

please help

Install more memory. 128 is not enough to run with xp. You need 256
minimum(ddr preferred), but I'd go with at least 512mb.

Almost certainly more RAM will help. 128MB is inadequate for
almost everyone running Windows XP.

How much RAM you need depends on what apps you run and how large
are the files you open with them. Most people running a range of
common business applications need somewhere around 256-384MB for
decent performance, but others, for example those who edit large
photographic images, can see substantial improvements by adding
more--even much more.
