Is there much system performance gain if I upgrade my CPU from XP
1800+ to XP 2100 ? I have 1GB DDR PC2700 and A7N8X mobo
Hi epl,
Only for games (fps..frames per second) providing you have a geforce4
or newer Radeon series video card and you'd want more cpu than 2100
to notice any difference....like a 2800+ on a 333 or 400 fsb w/dual-
channel ram.
The hard drive loads the programs...so your boot-up and application
start times will remain the same (unless HDD is upgraded or goes to
a Raid type system..if your board allows that).
You might consider a 2600+ or higher on a higer default FSB (front side
bus) which will increase the programs in memory execution speed.
The cpu crunches numbers such as for calculating where a pixel goes
on a screen (games) or for data-base calculations and 2100 over an
1800 is less_than + 10% effective in that area due to other limiting
factors besides cpu speed.
If you have good quality ram and you change the BIOS ram timings...
you will likely outperform a 2100+ that has stock/low ram timings
even with the 1800+.
CPU-Z is a freeware and can help view the ram settings/timings..

Aida 32 is freeware and has a couple of benchmarking tools..(plugin)
