I am running Windows XP Pro on a system with a motherboard that
can take a Pentium III using a 370 socket CPU running from about
450MHz to 1GHz. I recently got hold of a brand new 1 GHz PIII for free
and want to put replace my old 600MHz CPU.
I can set the speed using switches on th MB. The FSB speed is 133MHz
When I multiply the FSB speed buy setting the the switches I get 997
MHz when I multiply the FSB speed by 7.5X and 1064 MHz when I use 8X .

Which should I use? I do not want to overclock the CPU if it will
damage it.

Either one is so close to 1000 that it won't make any
difference if the CPU is in good condition.
