cpu hogging - slow system

Hi

A few hours ago, I started having a problem. I was connected to AOL Instant Messanger, but I could not connect to any sites through Zmud or Internet Explorer. The system started running very slowly, so I checked Task Manager, and sure enough CPU usage was at 100%. I rebooted, which usually fixes the problem. This time, it did not. The system would operate normally for a few minutes, and then suddenly everything would slow down. Epecially problematic is Earthlink, which I can't get to dial at all when CPU usage is that high. Checking Task Manager's processes list, I found that something called avserve.exe was consuming most of the system resources, so I nixed it to see what would happen. Everything operated fine for about 15 minutes or so, then I tried to do something in Zmud and got an error message telling me lsass.exe had stopped working and the system would be automatically rebooted. When the system rebooted, I had the same problem, and again ended avserve.exe; this time there was no other problem

Could anyone tell me what avserve and lsass are for? And does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do? I've run Spybot as well as a virus scan and turned up nothing. Since the problem started today I suppose I could do a restore, but I'd prefer not to, since I've altered things since then that I don't want to have to track down and back up

Thanks!

lsass.exe is a Windows file. Avserve cannot be found in Google, look
in the following pages:

If it is malware or a virus perform a virus scan with the latest
definitions and a malware scan using updated ad-aware and spybot.

Good luck

Thank you so much for your help

For anyone else who has this problem, the Stinger tool is also helpful in detecting and cleaning the Sasser worm

Mcafee just updated the risk assessment for this to medium, so apparently I'm not the only one hit. I'm usually safe from viruses because I don't make foolish downloads or open untrustworthy e-mail attachments or webpages. However, this virus uses a Windows exploit to download itself. So if you haven't yet, I'd suggest downloading this update that fixes the exploit

Thanks again, Roger!
