cpu goes to 100% after placing file in timeline

I'm importing an .mpg video. It imports fine, but when I
place it in the timeline it maxes the processor
indefinitely. This is new, as it worked fine the other
day. I have not made any software changes to the system.
 
MPEG2 files will do lots of strange things in MM2, depending on the codec
being used
 
These are not mpeg2, they are straight .mpg from my
digital camera. I think i may be having some kind of
rights issue. All my folders are marked as read only.
When I uncheck the read only box on any folder, it asks
to apply to all subfolders and files. I choose yes, it
does its thing, and when i look at the folder properties
again, it is checked again as read only. Never seen this
before.
