Hello all

I have 3 IBM P4's that are quite slow.

The IBM's are P4 256 Mb ram XP Pro.

On further investigation we noticed that the CPU Fan would stop when
XP loaded up. We gave the OS a good workout loading up a lot of apps
to see if under a load the CPU fan would kick in which it has not.

My understanding is that the P4 CPU's will slow down if they get hot
to stop them getting fried.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

IBM have been completely unhelpful suggesting we restore the system to
factory default and see if that helps. I don't believe that there is
any software on the system that would cause such a problem.

TIA

I forgot to mention that the fan works when in the BIOS. It only stops
when XP Loads

I doubt this is really related to XP...I've never found anywhere in it
that would come anywhere close to allowing it/me to control the fan
on/off. You could look in power managemement.

Good luck in this.

If the fans are not working then there is a major problem. My understanding
they continual work and if they are not working under load you probably can
fry a steak on them and it is a wonder your cpu can stand up under the
strain. I am assuming you are stating that once xp loads then the fan stop
working entirely. Sounds to me like a setting in the BIOS or the power
monitoring system is not set right. Since it is on 3 computers you can rule
out hardware failure. Somewhere there is a setup problem. The only reason
that IBM might have suggested restoring to factory setting is to reset
default settings. I assume they mean the hardware and software settings.
The software could mean xp. It sounds like you will have major problems and
maybe even hardware failure if the problem is not solved. Might even be
worth calling IBM back and ask for someone in a more senior position in tech
support. I have done it with a support problems that the first support
person knows so little that you have to tell him what he does not know.

hello

I came across the same problem, though I have i810L chipset. Cpu fan just stops working while xp pro with sp2 starts up, fan works fine when in bios and while booting. Previouslt I had win98 and it was ok, fan worked all the time. Wierd.

Did you find out anything about how to solves this problem? There seems to be no advanced power management settings under xp, though I havent looked into services and that kind of stuff.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem?

thanks in andvance,
Maido

Likely caused by not having installed the proper drivers for the
motherboard. Visit motherboard manufacturers web site.

Hi,

I have the same problem, in an IBM 6824-25A. The fan would only stop working after the BIOS POST (when it comes up with the Windows XP loading screen).

For anyone else trying to figure out how to fix this. Go into the BIOS and turn on "Legacy Fan Control" (or something of that description) to On.

Should fix the problem, however I've encountered a few problems after that with getting the system to recognise the mice, etc.

But thats another story.
