i recently upgraded my os to xp-pro sp2
the following problem occured
after something like half an hour with sygate firewall and emule running
the cpu is always at 100% and stays that way even after shutting down
both - apps and processes
only an os restart brings the cpu back to normal
that did not happen with w2k
any ideas?

What does task manager show as using the CPU cycles? That will be your
problem!

E-mule is probably still running as hidden process is the background. Right
click an empty spot on your taskbar > properties > click the "processes"
(tab), look for e-mule and end it.

Try terminating the emule program manually by using the
Task Manger. I have the same issues sometimes. It appears
the program is gone (not on task bar), but it is still
running behind the scene.

i found the problem
according to process explorer ist's the usbhub.sys with usb 2.0 support that came with sp2
(the problem occurs even without emule and sygate)
is there any way to get any old usb drivers running for i have an rather old abit kt7 raid board
without usb 2.0 anyway?

Well you could check in Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device
Manager in the USB devices down the bottom, and try d-clicking USB Host
controllers and disabling. But it would result in disabling the whole
USB system under that controller and hub. More to the point is that the
problem is likely to be in the drivers for a specific USB device, and
you need to disable them selectively to identify which

hey alex
you were right - it was a specific usb device (a canon canoscan n670u)
according to their support it's a well known problem
but they do not have any driver update 'til now
so i am going to connect the scanner just in the case it's needed
thanx
