Hi,
I'm having two probs with my new laptop

It has an AMD athlon XP-M 2200 CPU and according to all
websites i've checked with, it should be running at about
1.8Ghz, but anywhere i look withing XP (can't find it in
the BIOS) and when i use progs such as "the_clock.exe"
from tomshardware.com, it all tells me the laptop is
running at 1.05Ghz.
Whats going on here?

Also, it cam with 256MB PC2700 RAM but no matter where i
check, within XP or during POST, it appears as 192MB. My
PC has the same RAM so i switched it. When I put the PC
256MB RAM into the laptop, the laptop saw it as 192MB.
When I put the 256MB laptop RAM into the PC, it read it as
256MB. So I was definatly given 256MB but the laptop can
only see 192MB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Two things. First, check and see if there are any BIOS updates for your
computer. Second, you need to adjust the settings in the BIOS for the
FSB (Front Side Bus). Try setting it to 133 instead of 100 and see if it
runs at the rated speed. If it still isn't, up it to 166 and that
should do it. ;)

First - Mobile processors vary their output according to load - to
prolong battery life. Try changing the settings in the Bios to allow
full power whilst on mains power then test again.

Second - Your on-board graphics is using 64 Mb of your installed RAM -
this can usually be turned down in the Bios.

Andy.

The BIOS was up to date. There's no FSB settings in the
BIOS, infact i've never seen so little info in a BIOS
before, but I know from runnig Belarc Advisor that its
running at 133

Well your second point sorts my RAM question, i checked
the specs and you're right, it has 64MB shared graphics.
thanks.

As regards the CPU, for whatever reason i can't view CPU
settings in the BIOS.
According to MS (can't remember the article), XP gives
two CPU speeds, 1. current speed, 2. Max speed. The
article says that the max possible speed will always be
shown in Start->Accessories->System Tools->System
Information regardless of what the current speed is
showing. The Max speed is showing at 1.05Ghz.

I just need to be sure because I bought this version of
chip because its advertised to run at 1.8Ghz.

Thanks
Damien

Usually a power setting in the Bios to adjust CPU speed and brightness
of screen etc.; some can be controlled by external software; i8kfanui,
eg., for Dells running on Intel.

I have to ask what type of computer this is and if it actually supports
the higher Front Side Bus speed of the processor. You may need to
update the BIOS for CPU compatibility or find some way of getting your
FSB changed. Also, if you just bought this chip, I would try returning
it for a new one (if possible and doesn't cost you anything) and see if
the new one has the same problem.
