1. Can I see how fast my dialup modem is running?

2. I note that in my personal area of folders that some are green and
some are yellow. What is the significance of the colours?

Thanks

Taskmgr/networking gives some indication.

dunno

The green or custom colored ones are the user's folders to work with. The
generic yellow ones are either system folders or junction points for the
operating system to use (normally hidden unless the user changes folder
options to show system and hidden folders/files).

DU Meter will show you your upload and download speeds in real time.
http://www.hageltech.com/dumeter/
It's $20 but there is a free trail.
There is a quirk when using DU Meter with Vista. You must select your
"Network interface to monitor" from the drop down menu. The default is "all
interfaces" so change that setting to your modem.
Note that you have the option to read speeds in KB or Kb per second. I
prefer Kb as that is how the industry rates modems and how ISPs rate their
services. But Windows prefers to use KB per second when showing download
speeds. I've never understood why.

Thanks for the information.

I created a folder, and it is yellow?

Any comments?

I am looking at the Task Manager

Dial-up connection seems to have a Link Sp (whatever that is) of 118
kbps. But I am using a 56k modem? I wonder what this is measuring?

Thanks

Hi,

Yellow is the default for any new folder until customized by the user (if
he/she chooses to do so).

If you expand that column you will see the words "Link Speed". In my case it
reads 100Mbps because I am using a 100Mbps network card. In your case (I
guess) it's your theoretical maximum speed. But why 118 instead of 56Kbps I
don't know.
I just did a speed test and watched that graph. I'm not sure how to
interpret its reading. It scaled to 5% and my speed registered at approx
1.7% or so. The speed test indicated 1.4Mbps download which is about right
for my DSL.
And my DU Meter read the same numbers.
I again suggest you download DU Meter. You can use it for a month or so and
then remove it without paying a penny.
