Counting words in MS Word

Hi

For translation purposes I need to count the number of words that exist in a document. There are, however, some words that I do not want to count, because they do not need to be translated. Is there any way of excluding certaing word (e.g. company names) from Word's word count on a general level

I would also like to know exactly how Word counts the number of words in a document. If, for example, two words are separated by an underscore (like default_skin), then does Word count this as 1 or 2 words? And is the TOC included in the count

Presumably you tested these questions yourself before posting. What parts of
your research were inconclusive?

Re the first question, here's one thing to test. We just had a discussion
in the Mac ng about this. It seems that Word will count hidden text only if
you have "print hidden text" checked in the Tools | Options, Print dialog.
So you could temporarily format excluded words as hidden (suggest doing on a
copy of a document).

Or, if you select some text and do word count, it will only count the
selection. You could manually add the text to be translated that way, and
that info should allow you to find the answer to your second question.
