COUNTIF help needed!

How do I count all of the text cells in a given range that
are NOT null (i.e. all that contain text).

I tried
=COUNTIF(D14:D20,<>"")
but that gave me an error message.

What's the answer??

just forced to use this wonderful CDO interface from
Microsoft (as my client does not allow direct access to
newsservers) during the day
