I have 90 columns of data. The first row of each column contains th
name of a person, the second row his/her nationality.

A B C
Anne Gordon John
British French British

The 90 columns of data are still being edited, i.e. there will be mor
Names and nationalities in the future.

On another sheet I would like to display how many people of eac
nationality there are. Normally I would do a COUNTIF with the criteri
"British", but I do not know all of the nationalities yet.

Can anybody help me with this?
Thank

Hi

is there any particular reason that you're going across the columns for this
.... as you probably know there are only 256 columns whereas there are a lot
more rows ... in addition, if they were in rows you could easily achieve
what you're after by the use of a pivot table.

Hi JulieD
Unfortunately I cannot choose another format without userfriendlines
suffering.
I am also using a kind of three-dimensional table for which this layou
is vital.

[offtopic] Just out of interest though, can you recommend anywhere
could read up on Pivot Tables? I have tried to play with the functio
in Excel a little bit, but don't seem to get how it works, i.e. wha
the original data should look like and what part of a table to selec
when creating a Pivot table. [offtopic]
